Use a catalog rim when an existing platform fits the application and wheel build. Choose private-mold ODM when the product needs proprietary geometry, a different internal structure or a hub-specific spoke path, or when the project's required combination of weight and strength sits outside what an existing catalog platform is designed to deliver.

Project scope

Hub-specific molded spoke holes
A molded spoke-hole direction is fixed when the rim is formed. Before tooling, DeerCycles reviews the intended hub geometry, flange diameter and spacing, spoke count, lacing pattern, spoke type and nipple interface.
The aim is a cleaner spoke path from hub flange to rim, with less avoidable angular mismatch where the spoke enters the nipple. This is particularly relevant for carbon-spoke wheel systems, where the hub, spoke interface and rim should be defined as one system.
For a private-mold project, the rim profile, carbon layup and hub-specific molded spoke-hole structure can be developed together. Compared with adapting the closest catalog platform, this can support a lighter rim target while maintaining the strength target defined for the project. The final result remains model-specific and is confirmed through samples and validation.
A later change to hub geometry, spoke system or lacing requires a compatibility review. Depending on the approved design, valve and access holes may still require secondary machining or finishing. Project-specific values and validation records remain confidential.
Private-mold carbon rim testing
A private-mold project can combine a new rim profile, an internal cavity shaped for the project's requirements, molded spoke holes and a project-specific weight target. These elements are engineered, approved and validated together as one new configuration rather than carried over from an existing platform.
This is a private-mold development route. DeerCycles' existing catalog platforms use proven geometry and layups that balance weight, strength and production reliability, and they meet the requirements of most bicycle and wheel brands. These existing catalog molds use a proven conventional spoke-hole structure rather than the newer molded spoke-hole design. For a specialized project that demands an unusually aggressive combination of low weight and required strength, a catalog platform may not be the right starting point. In that case, DeerCycles can develop a dedicated private mold with molded spoke holes, a project-specific profile and layup, and a more involved manufacturing process as the route to pursue that target. Catalog rims and private-mold rims are assessed separately, each against its own drawing, layup, manufacturing process and validation plan, and final targets remain subject to project-specific engineering and testing.
Loose-rim roundness and flatness are checked against the project drawing to confirm mold accuracy and repeatability before wheel building.
The hub, spoke, nipple and lacing arrangement defined in the project build specification places the rim under the intended spoke tension and stress-relief process. The review covers the spoke-hole area, wheel runout and dimensional stability before and after assembly.
Tire-pressure testing uses the maximum pressure stated for the selected test tire together with the approved project method. DeerCycles does not apply one universal road, gravel or MTB pressure to every rim and tire combination.
Impact energy and other acceptance criteria belong to the exact profile, layup and test method under review. A private-mold result does not automatically apply to a catalog rim or another customer configuration.

The spoke-hole direction is formed into the rim, so it must be designed around the selected hub flange positions, hole count, lacing and spoke-and-nipple interface. Changing these inputs later can alter spoke alignment and may require a design or tooling review.
Private-mold development allows the profile, layup and spoke-bed structure to be considered as one design instead of accepting the limits of the nearest catalog rim. A lower weight target is evaluated against the same model-specific strength and validation requirements; it is not a universal result.
